In 1996 Bill Gedye and Steve Mawdsley founded Casa De Malahato, a small one humidor cigar shop in a Restaurant. Robert Gagnon joined soon after, bringing a knowledge of design and computers with him. Soon we were "online". We were probably the first online cigar store in Canada, having been approached by MSN (Microsoft Network) to have a test store front with them. Ecommerce had arrived to Canada.
Within a few months, sales went ballistic, especially after joining a cigar website called www.fuji.com (now fujipub.com). Bill left and then it was just Steve and Rob. Rob focused on Creating the Ecommerce engine for the business while Steve became the Voice of Casa, the phone order meister. We outgrew the restaurant and in Feb 1997 we moved to a defunct coffee shop in Victoria.
The coffee bar was Orange walls, orange floors and looked like a 70's nightmare; but appearances are deceiving. The building was the Former Station Hotel, a notorious Brothel at the turn of the Century.( We had the pleasure of speaking to more than one person who remembered the old hotel in all its..er..glory. Anyhow, a whole lot of elbow grease later, we found a mosaic tile floor under the orange tiles. We put up oak paneling and created Vancouver Island's first smoking lounge. Our store was found on the internet under http://www.canada-stores.com/casa and we had the pleasure of serving thousands of happy customers.
In May of 1998, Robert decided to sell his stake to Steve and investigate other Internet startup opportunities.
Having gained valuable new experience in over 12 internet related launches, it was time to return to the products and people he loved. In Jan 2000 Robert made the decision to re-launch Canada-Stores.com to provide International Visitors with the bounty of Canadian fields, oceans and Retailers. A one stop source for good things Canadian, ranging from Tobacco to Seafood.
